Your Post Office - Your Choice
The following list of actions were originally produced for the "Your Post Office - Your Choice" campaign, begun in the spring of 2006, and aimed at ensuring that Willington Post Office avoided being closed by the Post Office Network Change programme. The aim was to get each local household to take up at least one of the new Post Office products or services. That would have meant about 1,000 sales being credited to Willington. Over two years, we achieved about 10% of that target, so there is still plenty of scope for the future.
The list of actions has been extended to reflect more recently available Post Office products and services.
Following the completion of that PO closure programme at the end of 2008, these actions will be just as important in ensuring that Willington continues to have its own Post Office and general store in the years to come.
1. Bank here. If your bank can’t be accessed free – open a second bank account – that can be useful for budgeting. If your bank can be accessed free – do it more.
2. Switch from BT to PO HomePhone. Before BT it was the GPO – you will just be switching back to the way it was! You won’t affect BT’s profits, but you will help to save your Post Office, you avoid BT’s £4.50 bill payment charge and you save money on your phone bill too. Free evening and weekend calls included. 3. Holiday / Travel Money on demand for Europe & USA plus other Foreign Currency. Buy Euro or US dollar notes here whenever you need them – no delay. Order any of 70 other currencies to pick up the next day. Euro or US Dollar travellers cheques are also available here on-demand with no delay.
4. Car, Van, Lorry, Bus, Motorcycle Tax. Ignore the DVLA adverts for doing it on-line or over the phone – do it here instead and get your new disc straightaway.
5. PO Instant Saver. Open an account here - great rate of interest, tracks Bank of England base rate. Instant access to your money without notice. If required, upto £1,000 can be withdrawn each day at our counter.
6. Pay bills here. Most household & utility bills can be paid here without a fee being charged.
7. PO Credit card. If you already have a credit card (or two) consider getting a Post Office credit card. Good rates, reduced rate for up to two purchases a year, no transaction fee when used abroad, 0% interest on balance transfers, etc.
8. Travel Insurance. Check out the Post Office insurance rates before booking your holiday. You will be surprised at the savings you can make compared to policies offered with your holiday. More than one holiday a year? Consider an annual policy.
9. Pet insurance. Cover upto £5,000 per condition. Vet bills paid direct - even if treatment lasts more than 12 months (assuming premiums up to date). 5% discount for each pet after the first.
10. Medium and longer term savings. Growth Bond gives a good fixed rate of return over 1, 2 or 3 years. Fiveyear Saver gives a fixed rate of return on half your money, while the other half is linked to stock market performance.
11. Life Insurance. With products aimed at the younger person, those wanting cover for a mortgage that dcreases over time, or guaranteed insurance for the over 50s (with no medical required) there is bound to be something to meet your needs.
12. Lifestyle Protection. An affordable way to help protect your income if you can't go to work. You choose what bills to cover and set the level of protection accordingly. This is not tied to any particular loan or regular bill, so you can tailor it to meet your precise needs.
13. Cristmas Club. Save as little as £5 a time, make top-up payments whenever you wish or can afford, save upto £1,000 in one year and you have a payment card that you can use in a wide range of shops during November and December.
14. Child Trust Fund. When you have a new-born baby, the Government gives them a voucher worth £250 to invest in a Child Trust Fund. The Post Office offers a great account for parents to invest this voucher and help save for their child's future.
15. Mail Services. Post your items here and get the right service. To send a number of items without waiting, leave cash or a cheque to cover costs. We’ll process them and give you your receipt and any change later.
16. Car, Van or Home insurance. Attractive rates and great service when you need to claim. Post Office voted best car insurance provider two years in a row by people who had main insurance claims.
17. Apply at the counter. Most benefit is gained for Willington Post Office this way, but some products can only be obtained via an 0800 freephone number or via the internet.
